AT&T has announced plans to sunset its 2G network by January 1, 2017 in order to support the continuing significant increases in demand for mobile Internet services on their 3G and 4G networks. The AT&T spectrum reallocation efforts have already begun in select areas on a market-by-market basis. Customers can experience mixed coverage, reduced signal strength, or no available network connection for devices communicating on the AT&T 2G network. The scheduled Georgia sunset date is July 30th, 2014.
2G devices, including Uplink devices, utilizing 2G GSM services hosted directly on the AT&T network (Uplink 25xx) could be impacted if no steps are taken by the customer. 2G devices utilizing all other US GSM services could be impacted in areas where they currently roam on the AT&T network and/or are not able to connect to an alternate 2G provider. This means that devices in the 25xx family that are not able to connect to an alternate 2G provider will cease to function.
Uplink CDMA products do not utilize the AT&T network and therefore will not be affected by AT&T’s announced 2G sunset.
